YorkFest 09

Not only is YorkFest the largest event of York University’s student year, but with more than 50,000 students and 7,000 faculty, it is actually one of the largest welcome events held on any campus across Canada. The two day festival features the YorkFest Village – which plays host to over 200 services, companies and student clubs – and a free concert headlined by a major Canadian band.

Hockey’s Greatest Debate

As a final information design project, the opportunity arose to tackle an interesting debate… with this info-graphic that displays and dissects hockey’s most elite players. Using several forms of prediction, the information passes through various stages, eliminating any advantages that each player may have had. The size and darkness of each blue graph represents the strength of the player from a statistical and financial standpoint. The information is set up on a matrix; moving to the right of the page, the playing field evens out and the natural ability of each player becomes more apparent. The most intriguing aspect of the project was seeing the value of players change over time, and in the end I discovered some exciting results.

This infographic was designed for a school project which saw each student select on everyday object, then analyze, research and map its life. The chosen item here is a Papermate Mirado wood-cased pencil. The map covers all aspect of this particular pencil, from its production to its sale, and from the history of its maker to the impact it has on the market. The focus was to compile and display complex amounts of data and to do so simply and effectively.

The Grand Design

The Grand Design is a modern twist on classic book design. The first chapter of Robert Bringhurst’s “The
Elements of Typographic Style” is captured in this bible-sized book. The twist is in the pacing and structure of
the text. Designed for the contemporary reader, each page introduces a new paragraph, making the book
feel like a faster and easier read, while maintaining an aesthetic that contributes to the value of the words on
the page. This design instills a sense of progress.

Aquiline Nose

This typeface design reflects the pride and strength of Rome. It was originally inspired by and modeled from roman noses themselves, but the shape of the letterforms initially became too spotty and repetitious. The face had to be reinterpreted and reformed to more strongly bring out some of the letters’ more subtle features. The result is Aquiline Nose, a unique face with historic typographic references dating back to square capitals with geometric sans serif proportions, like those of Futura.
